Has autograph collecting stooped to this low a level with young collectors?

I agree with you 100%. I know many people say "at least they sent me something" but really they didnt send you anything a secretary or assistant glanced at your letter reached into a drawer and pulled out a picture put it in the envelope and returned it to you. When people see this they sat it was a success. With that thinking someone find an autograph on the computer and print it out and say they now have an autograph from that celebrity. I am an autograph collector not a photograph collector. I keep the preprints in the envelope they came in to compare with a real autograph in the hopes I get one.

I'd rather get a letter saying "This celebrity can't be bothered...etc", than get a PP, stamp, sec or autopen.

In my opinion you are right and wrong. If you recieve an Autopen, then it is usually the same shape as the persons autograph. I actually think that what you have said is a little unfair - People who don't mind getting AP's and PP's are not stooping low, they are just happy that they at least recieved something. I think that you should be moe careful about how you word your opinions

You're missing the point.

AUTOGRAPH collecting is about collecting AUTOGRAPHS. An autopen is NOT an autograph, neither is a PP or secretarial.

To give a different example -

A stamp collector collects stamps, right? Well if there was a stamp they didnt have in their collection, do you think they'd like a picture of the stamp instead to complete their collection? Of course they wouldnt. Its the same with autograph collecting, if you dont have the real deal, why would you want a fake instead?

Great Point, Andy! What is the fun in getting a fake autograph? You spend time writing letters to celebrities in hopes of them reading your letter and responding to it.. when you get a fake autograph they don't even read your letters most of the time so I don't see why it would be considered a success when you waste time and postage getting a fake autograph that you could print yourself on your computer.

Some people are happy with what they get, in my opinion it is not up to other people to judge people who are happy with what they get. As fr the stamp thing, obviously they would prefer the real thing, but a picture of it would still show that you likes that stamp. An Ap or PP still shows that you are a fan.

My comment regarding younger collectors was saying that its usually those (aka Newbies) who refuse to believe secs/autopens are fake, they stubbornly argue that they're real.

I know some experienced collectors keep PPs and APs, but that wasnt my point.

I agree with you Andy.. I may be a yound collector but I'd like to think that I have some knowledge on the subject.. I've been doing it for 2 1/2 years. {thumb2} I don't keep PP's or AP's either

I treat an autopen/PP/sec- as a reply, but not a sucess. But I still think we should respect what others think, even if we do not accept it. Just like my sister she thinks a pp is great! To be honest, when she gets a pp, shes happier then when i get a genuine one! funny enough andy, my friend who collects stamps does collect replica stamps, as he cant afford the real ones.
