Why don't celebrities answer questions in a letter?

I wrote to about 5 different celebrities and got 2 to respond but they only signed the photo and did not answer anything with any sort of personalized response. It was 9 different questions about their acting careers - nothing really very personal. Was it too many questions and they were just too busy? I'm wondering if other people send fan mail with questions. Why would they not take the time to answer them and just sign the photo?

These people have absolutely no obligation to even open your mail. You are lucky they signed your photo. I would guess that most mail is initially opened by someone else and the photos and return envelopes are organized into stacks, perhaps with sticky notes saying "sign to 'David'", and the celebrity rushes through and just signs them all, etc, and then whomever organized it all for them puts things back into envelopes and mails them out.

That's just my guess of how it may work for some people.

Also just consider the sheer volume of mail they must be getting. I think a lot of the posters here are young, and they all want Harry Potter signatures. These actors may get a hundred letters a day. It's just impossible for them to take the time to read each and every letter and reply to them. Just be glad you got the signature.

I sent one celeb three photos, and it looks like she signed two of them, but then perhaps missed the 3rd and her assistant or whomever may have signed it, because there is some strange variability in the signatures between two photos and the third.

Celebrities usually seat at a table signing all the photos fans have sent. They don't have time to read each letter. Some of them will answer a Q&A. They are very busy people. If at all their manager or publicist (depends where you sent) might read the letter.

Some of them do, but it does depend on the person.

Ok, that's what I was thinking what happened too. I can't think really what would be a perfect solution if you got hundreds of letters each day. There could be 2 assistants - one answering letters with the celeb telling the person what to type back and the the other one could be posting status updates on the celeb's site saying we are now going through the letters from such and such date (order in received). They could set aside a set block of time per day (maybe an hour or so) just for letters.

I do know if I was a celeb that was very big I wouldn't let a letter go unanswered but that's just me. I would come up with some way to handle it as after all, people like that must make a lot of money to hire many assistants. Thank you for the info. If I send mail to future celebs I'll just ask no more than 2 questions and say if you have time please respond.
