It really depends on the celebrity. most will have photos they can send. for me personally, I make it a point to always send them items to sign.
in rare cases, like Bill Cosby, if you don't send an item for him to sign, his secretary will sign one on his behalf and send it out, but if you send him something, he's sign it authentically. weird I know, but that's how some are.
Just remember to always be polite in your requests and use 'please' and 'thank you'.

I totally agree! Plus, even though I type my letters instead of hand-writing them, I try to be as personable as I can with each person I write to. This can be difficult when I'm pushing myself to get as many out in the mail as I can (as this birthday gift project is time-sensitive, of course.)
