Re: Adele SUCCESS
Hey,
2 points, if I may...
1. There is nothing wrong in my eyes with using email to get autographs, the only problem is when people spam them for no reason, not being a fan of the person and just wanting an autograph for the sake of it, or to make $$$$.
2. Using an SASE might not be "sacred" as you put it, but it is without doubt the polite thing to do. Too many people expect something for nothing, and if you take the time to write to someone, have photos printed etc then you show that you're making an effort. For a lot of celebrities that is then undermined by not having an SASE to cover return postage. Manners cost nothing, a stamp costs a minimal amount. If you're expecting the celebrity to pay for every letter to go back to people, then you're in for a disappointment. Some will do it, some won't, but the money you'll lose in the outgoing letters because replies don't come back could have been much better utilised in providing SASE's for the ones you really wanted.
On the note of your collection, it sounds pretty cool... would love to see some pics if you have a website showing them, especially as you've been a member for a couple of years yet posted NO feedback, and indeed copy/pasted your rant from one you made previously.

Re: Adele SUCCESS
You do realize, I assume, that e-mailers are not the only ones who try to sell their autographs, although I have never tried to. In fact, I would think that someone who had invested in pictures and postage might be more likely to try and recoup their investment, but that's just my opinion.
My personal perspective is that there is a certain segment of the celebrity world that is a) able to allocate a certain part of their budget for fan publicity and postage and b) not likely to be overwhelmed by massive numbers of requests. That's the part of the arena that I target, and, although I may only be successful with one out of every ten e-mail requests that I make, it's fine with me if that's all I'm ever able to obtain.
I actually post my information on another forum, which includes an address and results database. Out of respect for this forum, I won't give the name, but it's fairly easy to find.
I don't typically post successes on this board, because:
1) I don't really want to get involved in the gratuitous ooh's and ahh's that many seem to engage in (not saying that there's anything wrong with it, but it's just not my thing),
2) I prefer to use a site where the connection between addresses and results is a little more direct, and
3) That particular database lets you catalog your own personal successes, which then eliminates the need for me to have my own website.
BTW, yes my comments were an update of a previous message, but, since this debate seems to resurface from time to time, I thought that they bore repeating. If you want to characterize them as a rant, that's certainly your privilege, but I'm not quite sure why you would find my remarks more incendiary than the ones that had already been made.

Believe it or not, I'm aware of this, if you can't see the reasoning behind my point then there's no point continuing this line. I did at no point indicate that you had tried to sell anything.

This perplexes me, as it sounds more and more like you collect just for the hell of it, rather than people you actually like. If you're happy with random email responses, that's your call, but I would have thought someone who enjoyed collecting might expand beyond emails.

Seriously? I don't think it's disrespectful to post a forum link on here it's not like this is the only autograph forum in the world.

My comments are more because people who come on and complain about things, but don't actually post any feedback on the website at any point, or give anything to it other than moans tend to be overlooked shall we say? If you're just coming on here, looking for info and then leaving, with an occasional moaning comment then you can't expect to be taken overly seriously, especially if you don't provide any evidence of your successes, post them somewhere but don't give any indication of what they are here.

Not at all, I just don't see why you felt the need to kick in the same comment again, and try to take the moral high ground. That being said, given you post your address in open view in numerous places to try and get successes, I'm not surprised that the common sense approach is impossible to see. I'm not looking an argument, but you do, I presume, understand that if you don't put anything into a forum, then you can't expect to be taken seriously.

Re: Adele SUCCESS
If this were not the holiday weekend, I would probably have already left this discussion behind, but, since I have a few extra minutes, I'll attempt to respond, although I suspect I may ultimately have to just agree to disagree. I will not try to dispute anything that is essentially your opinion, but, for the purpose of clarification, I will use the format you opted for in your last response.
Believe it or not, I'm aware of this, if you can't see the reasoning behind my point then there's no point continuing this line. I did at no point indicate that you had tried to sell anything.
My original point was that the problem of "wanting an autograph ... to make $$$$" is not something that is inherent to people using email, but a situation that occurs among all means of collecting. I'm not sure why you didn't see that reasoning, but I'm not going to belabor the point nor disparage your abilities as a result.
This perplexes me, as it sounds more and more like you collect just for the hell of it, rather than people you actually like. If you're happy with random email responses, that's your call, but I would have thought someone who enjoyed collecting might expand beyond emails.
Although I would assume that, primarily, most people determine who they "like" as they listen to and/or watch their work, I may just have a slightly more expansive perspective of how I come to that conclusion. Having done quite a bit of in-person autograph collecting, I "actually like" athletes, in particular, who treat their fan base well and have simply extended that to those whom I have not had the chance to actually meet (e-mailing is what I've chosen to do to "go beyond" my in-person collecting).
Seriously? I don't think it's disrespectful to post a forum link on here it's not like this is the only autograph forum in the world.

I didn't really think that I was complaining about anything, other than the combative and dismissive tone of the messages, but I wasn't aware that that was not considered a legitimate observation. If there is a minimum number of postings necessary to be "taken ... seriously," I'm guessing that I probably won't reach 325 anytime soon.

I don't really mind if you want to analyze how and where I post whatever I do, but I would appreciate a little more accuracy - I believe that I said that "there is no real moral distinction," so I'm not sure why that is considered "taking the moral high ground." I was not looking for an argument in the first place, but, if I were, I would try to avoid rhetorical devices and hyperbole such as "common sense" and "impossible." I would hope that frequency is not an absolute requirement for being "taken seriously," but, if so, I will abstain from my occasional comments and, as I said, agree to disagree.

Re: Adele SUCCESS
I agree with you there is nothing wrong about requesting a autograph via email if you really love the artist but why post a success and not post a photo of the envelope or the autograph :/ ? abit weird ? and i personally think this post is just for spam and to try and get people jelous.. correct me if I'm wrong if the poster posts the photo and a photo of the envelope i will apologise but it seems like its not a real success.luckyas13canbe wrote:Hey,

The fact no pic has appeared yet says it all in terms of the original poster.

I did enjoy my holiday, and, since I didn't take the opportunity to mention it previously, I wanted to commend you on your charity work - I see that this is much more than just a hobby to you.

Glad to hear it, and thanks for you kind words. For what it's worth, I may have been suffering from a bit of sleep deprivation when I posted previously - I could probably have phrased my thoughts better.wongcastle wrote:I did enjoy my holiday, and, since I didn't take the opportunity to mention it previously, I wanted to commend you on your charity work - I see that this is much more than just a hobby to you.
Re: Adele SUCCESS
Man, people can be heartless on here...LOL. I have emailed some people, especially musicians, because some of them may be on tour or location. I have been writing people TTM for over 20 years and use both methods to contact my "targets". Lucky, as I can see, you've been a member of this forum for less than 6 months, so in my eyes, you're a newbie. Maybe not to the hobby but certainly to this forum. About selling autographs, to each his own. The way I see it, if I have to pay for one, then I have no problem with selling it. Some I never would, but everything does have its price. Virgil Trucks and my Cardinals Dynasty collection are the only "safe ones" in my collection, but I only work on offers, not advertised sales.
I agree that the Adele post is probably a fake, and it's a shame because my daughter really does admire her and she is an amazing singer. What I find funny is how far off topic this has become. I stopped posting on here because all I do now is sports and I see nothing new that I've been interested in for a while. Plus the stress factor of some ignorant people isn't worth the time.
