Well, the news today is pretty darned good :). I just got my AFP/Quad Screening tests back and they look great.

My chances for having a baby with Down's syndrome by serum blood levels are 1 in 863 and combined with my age, my actual risk factor is less than 1 in 10,000 for having a baby with Down's.

All they could tell me about the Edward's part of the screening was that it was negative.

My AFP was peachy at 1.08 (which would be more than double that in the case of Down's Syndrome)...so that was normal.

My HCG levels were 13,889, which is also normal.

As for the thyroid part, they're being quite secretive about things.

But with the very low instance of false negatives for this test, I'm now pretty assured that everything will be fine with the baby. We go in on June 30th for a 3D ultrasound that will check for all of the other signs/symptoms of Edward's disease (a very rare disease that only 50% of babies will survive the first few weeks...and only 10% will survive their first year). It is very rare, but choroid plexus cysts are found in about 1/3 of all of the cases of Edward's....so there is a very weak link the other way around.

Assuming everything is great on the 3D ultrasound, I'll be removing myself from high risk care (since the first perinatalogist I saw was a true jerk about everything)...and I'll be going back to just my midwife and possibly an endocrinologist for the thyroid issue if there even is one. It will be a big relief to all of us to see that everything is great on the 3D and the AFP test just more definitely confirms for me that everything will be great with the baby.

P.S. She's a whopping 5 ounces already! About an ounce ahead of herself for "normal ranges". She's also measuring 2 days ahead of my due date with all of the critical measurements averaged together :).

Very cute Ian :)....thanks :).

I'll be really relieved hopefully on Friday. They've schedule my appointment with an endocrinologist. Here's the confusing part. On May 5th, my level was 4.0 (it is supposed to be less than 2.4)....and on the 25th it was 3.4! You'd think that was great and I don't know why they've finally figured out that it may be time to see an endocrinologist! Since I have no clinical symptoms and my levels seem to be dropping, I think I'll be okay with observations and I'll have strong reservations about medications (risks to me and the baby). I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.

That's great that the levels go down :P , and hopefully it will still turn out to be nothing serious. Best of luck, and we'll all have our fingers crossed for you!

Well, I saw the endocrinologist today and now everyone is agreement that I need to take the drug to treat my over-active thyroid. It will take a lot of follow-up blood tests, because it is a very serious condition. I'll write more later...today has been horrible and all I've done is being upset and not knowing whether or not to treat it or if that would do more harm. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers...we'll be needing them in the next few months.
