How to request a signature?

Hello,

So I know about being polite etc., but how do you ask for an autograph from someone who moved on from your favorite team (i.e. - you have a card from the Pats but the guy ended his career with the Saints). I am just a collector and not interested in selling stuff, but I hate to tell someone I am a huge fan, when I am only a huge fan of the team they once played for.

Also, what are people saying when they request a photo via email?
