Nearly 90% of autograph TTM collectors will tell you that it is polite and appropriate to include some sort of return postage or envelope. I myself use to send SASE's all the time but recently when sending to the US, I have started to just send SAE's and apologised for why I am unable to include return postage. But if you are just starting to collect, I suggest you include SASE's if you can. Autograph collecting is not about who sends what and who replies if you don't include an SASE/SAE ect.

There was no need to give Andy a ( {down} ) for just stating a fact either.

As Andy & TheMailman said, It really is more polite if you send an SASE because after all.. you are asking for their autograph & to not pay for the return postage is asking a little much. Often times it also helps you recieve your request back faster.

i am sorry if your upset about the minus point but that is really kinda a lie what you said. because all over this site people have gotten responces without and some people who send get something back but their s.a.s.e. wasnt used sending and dont recieve it back either. i understand most of the time sending via venue you should send one so i am going to do that today on 4 out of six of my letters the other two are not via venue.
What I said was not a lit at all, its a fact, and I do not appreciate being called a liar. Yes some celebs reply if you dont send an SAE/SASE, but the vast majority do not, which is what my original post said.

The fact that certain celebs do indeed pay return postage is irrelevant, in my opinion (and the overwhelming opinion among collectors) it that it is common courtesy to cover postage costs yourself.

it might be too late... but i wanted to tell you. when you write carrie at that fanmail address you are just going to get a postcard telling you thanks for the letter and you can join the official fanclub.... (the fanclub is very nice).. she doesnt really send out letters/signed pics anymore... i have seen some success if you give her something in person... she will usually respond... or if you see her and ask .... but in the mail.... not too much anymore..... sorry about that... a lot about carrie.... but i didnt want you to waste your envelopes

I know many of you on here have probably heard this story before (so forgive me if you have ;-) )

I am very pro-sending out SASEs. I always send them. Every time - without exception.

But as a little test about 18 months/2 years ago I sent out a batch of 50 autograph requests (for charity) and did not enclose return postage (although I did send a self addressed envelope with each). After about 6 months I had only received back about 6 out of that 50 where the celeb/agent had paid the postage. I got a couple more back where they didn't put any postage on at all, and I had to pick them up from the post office and pay the postage (plus a £1 fine for each one).

Anyway, to conclude my little test, I then re-mailed the same 50 celebs (now 6 months later), but this time including the return postage with each one. Within about 4 months I had had the majority back, and from memory I eventually received about 40 out of the 50 back.

So although not scientific proof  I think my little test proves that the level of response is far, far greater, more productive and far cheaper in the long-run (not to mention more polite) if you pay the return postage!

Lecture over
Ian
