Intend on keeping your collection forever?

Unread post by The.Evening.Optimist »

The more autograph websites and forums I browse, the more people I see posting things like : 'getting out of the hobby', 'all autographs must go', 'selling my collection', etc. Now, obviously everyone has a different reason for collecting autographs, but I thought the general notion is to keep your collection forever?! :neutral: This is certainly what I intend to do, I'll never sell my collection or rid myself of my hard-earned pieces of celebrity, sports, and political history. I will eventually hand my collection down to my children as I'm proud of it, and would be livid if they do not keep it in the family. I would also encourage them to take up the hobby so a great collection from generation to generation can amass.

Why do people get rid of their collections after a few years? Do you think you probably will at one point or the other or keep it? Are you collecting with the intention of selling everything after some time? I just find it interesting, any comments welcomed.

I have just started. Though I definetely will keep mine as long as I can. Hopefully will pass it down to my children or my family. I agree, what we are doing it collecting history to be quite honest. Also there is a lot of memories and stories that come with each autograph. It would be an absolute waste to toss that all away.

Also hopefully one day I will be able to sit around with my grandchildren and tell them about each person. Then I will be more then happy to help them start their collection:)

I intend to keep mine forever, as a symbol of how much I adored certain people and significant political and literary figures. I plan on passing it down the family infact. I hope never to use it in those situations that people get into: "financial issues". It a hobby - yes, hobbies can slow down, but never backfire and make me want to get rid of my stuff. I have stopped hobbies for some periods of time to take a break, but I always get back to it

Definitely so... unless circumstances such as death or the like come up or they become a legend... then I would consider selling to the family of the Smithsonian or something..lol. Otherwise, I love my collection!

I intend on keeping mine forever. At the moment my collection isn't that exciting as most of the autographs I have are from small screen actors and the best reaction I get is "Oh that's her from Eastenders." :roll: but when someone passes away, interest in them mounts. I mean a few years ago, anyone could get a Lawrence Olivier autograph so it was nothing amazing but now everyone is like "Wow, Lawrence Olivier!!" I hope in years to come, I will be proudly showing off my collection of departed British legends! {thumb2}

Agreed! I hope one day I can pass them on and tell stories about people who are somewhat unknown or not known by EVERYONE at the moment, and people whose performance/music (the majority of mine will be/are Broadway related) has in some way moved me! (Sounds so corny, but true) And one day when a revival comes along, they can get so&so's autograph and then have both "Lucy's" or whatever character!
WONDERLAND:Alice's New Musical Adventure enjoyed a short, but sweet run on Broadway in Spring of 2011!

Glad to see that there are still a few people out there who don't collect with the intention of giving away/selling their autographs to a 'foster home' one day :lol: as everyone has said it would be great to sit down with the kids one day and tell them how you obtained certain autographs, who the people were, why they were significant to you, etc. Autographs are much the same as holiday photos, in that they provide memories and stories to fondly recount.

iheartcelebs, I could never imagine selling one of my auto's, even if the celebrity passed away and the value shot up incredulously. I think a lot of people make hasty decisions after a celebrity dies with the money motive in mind, and regret it afterwards. I think its more special to keep something you know you wont get again! :)

Well, I just started collecting, but still I intend to keep my collection forever... well at least until I die xD 'cuz I din't start collection to collect and sale only to earn money, I collect because when I get autograph it makes me feel a little bit closer to celeb ;) I can say that I'm kinda obsessed or smthing because when i watch a movie it's like " I've gotta have his/her' autograph" xD I don't understand people who are selling their "precious treasures", because they spent so much time to get what they have and sell it all in a moment. So, yeah I'm gonna keep my collection forever {thumb2}
