Thanks, it's good to know what other people do! {up}

I always tell the people I write to that I'm from Portugal, since it kind of makes it unique because I doubt they receive much fanmail from here. I like to write my age too, but now I'm very regretful because I forgot to do so on my last letter and now there's no turning back :( Well, at least I'm sure that won't define if I get a success or not!

I write my age if I have a reason, but not always. Here's an example where I usually do. I'm a soap fan and typically my favorite characters are the ones who have been there like 30 years; the vets. They have more depth and in my opinion are written and casted better than most newbies. In letters to them, I always tell my age (21 tomorrow). This is because of what the higher ups seem to think. The writers and such are under the impression that younger viewers aren't interested in vet characters. I feel if I write my age it might help prove them wrong. I'm only in my 20's, but as you can tell by the banner below, I love long-time characters.

Anyway that's just me. I write my age to help the daytime writers pull their heads out of the sand. Lol.

I don't often put in my name unless I feel it necessary. Of course I may do if I am writing to a particular sportsman and I feel it necessary to tell em my age and country of origin...
I don't feel it helps nor hinders you too much, so long as the context of your letter is reasonably intelligent (ie. Ive heared of people who write basic letters and get basic replies back).

Everyone has their own way of doing things and if it works for you and your happy then thats great!

Best of luck in your collections,

Considering I generally only write to academia (scientists, inventors, astronauts, Nobel Prize laureates, etc.) I don't put my age, but I say "I am an undergraduate at so-and-so university studying...". So basically, they know I'm college student age.

Only when I'm writing to older actors & actresses who may not be expecting someone so young to be writing to them. I really go to town on my letters to these people so that they know I'm a genuine fan even though I'm young.
