Boycott Beijing Olympics?

Yes they should boycott the games. However, they should also sack the idiots who elected to have the games in China in the first place.

Nope. Sport is sport, and politics is politics. I think its a good thing actually as its putting china in the spotlight, if the olympics werent going to be there no-one would care less, cos thats the way the world works. I have no problems with the olympics being there, its a country with talented sports men and women, which is what the olympics is all about.

I don't condone the politics there, but thats a separate issue. I'm looking forward to it all anyway.

(and London 2012 will be rather good if you ask me. imagine all the processions. if theres one thing us brits are good at, its processions. and as for not getting stuff done on time, if they#'re using the same building company thats whacking up flats everywhere round my way, then they;ll be ready by the end of the year...)

Well as a politician I feel I better say something about this. I feel very strongly about the human rights problem in China right now but I dont think voycotting the olympics will help. I also do not think dropping a nuclear bomb on the United States #2 trading partner (#1 being my country) would be a smooth move either. I am supporting a boycott of the opening ceremonies of the olympics to send a message to the Chinese government that we do care about there situation and just because they have the olympics we won't forget that they need to shape up.

There are way too many horrible things China has done.

Yes, I know seperate the politics from sports...but that never happens anyway. Sure people have the right to compete/watch the games, but people also have the right to live in freedom (but China really doesn't care too much about that - what with the genocide, human rights violations, and numerous other inhumane deeds). Plus athletes should be concerned with all the pollution China has.

In Canada students are a very important part of the political process. I do have a political position in my political party and it takes up most of my time.

Maybe things are different round this side of the world - I'm of the opinion that you have to complete a university degree in the field of politics first in order to call yourself a politician. I'm a member of the opposition party here in SA but considering I don't have a degree in politics yet, I don't regard myself as a politician. But our systems are too different to compare ;)

Can you please give me examples of genocide, human rights violations, and numerous other inhumane deeds going on in China? Even if they were any problems ; in what ways would boycotting the olympics solve the problems?

It is strange that some people really believe America is such a 'free' and 'liberated' nation, and all other countries, expectally those on the other side of the word are 'horrible'. They think bad things only happen out of America, maybe that shows how effective american propaganda is! perhaps this would show u some facts you cannot get from cnn.

If memory serves me well, in 1970 my country was banned/boycotted from taking part in the Olympics, as well as from competing in other sporting tournaments like cricket and rugby world cups. It did NOTHING to stop the human rights abuses of Apartheid happening - that lasted until 1990 - twenty years later after our 'Olympics incident'. One may argue that it exposed the horrors of what was happening to the world, but countries like the USA and France still sat back and did nothing, preferring rather to maintain good business relations. At the end of the day it was president De Klerk's choice to free Mandela, and at the end of the day, its going to be the Chinese government's choice to do what they want regarding Tibet. If a football world cup was boycotted due to politics I'd be really angry. They can boycott the opening ceremony yeah, but leave it at that. Let the games be peaceful. One must remember that a country once invaded and colonialised (as China was by the Mongols and Tartars) can sometimes retain the scar of its past, forge a very strong national pride (also Germany under Hitler, post WWI), and in turn try neutralise the 'threats' to its hard-fought greatness and empiricism, which Tibet is doing by wanting independence. China would help their image immensely if they just gave the Tibetans what they want, or at least negotiated peacefully about it.
