You don't have to.

If you feel comfortable to omit the Mr when writing to this particular person, do so. If not - put it in.

I've run into this problem myself with female celebs. I usually just take a stab at it, and then mention in the letter that I wasn't sure how they prefer to be addressed. I always use an honorific and last name, though.

What you could do is go to wikipedia and look up their marital status...
also, a lot of times wikipedia will tell you what their preferred title is...
just a thought
