How to get extra time at a signing

So A signing event with a star be it a book signing or a sport or whatever.
How does one get a few extra seconds or minutes with their heroes.. when being pushed thru the line.

I've always found that when I go to things, when it's my turn I just starting talking to them and then they usually talk with me and when the celeb says its okay then usually the security doesn't do anything. But I've only been a few that way most of my IP are more a one of one thing.
