Books :)

Unread post by x hayley x »

I thought this would make an interesting discussion topic.
What book is everyone currently reading? What's it about?
What is the best book you have ever read? What's it about?
Who would you consider your favourite author? Why?

I am currently reading 'The story of childhood - Growing up in modern Britain' by Libby Brooks. Libby stayed with 9 different children, all from very different backgrounds, classes and cultures over set periods of time and she reports on what she discovered and also discusses different things in the news relating to situations relating to what they are going through. I have less than a hundred pages to go so that won't take me long at all to finish.

The best book I've ever read is 'Shattered Dreams' by Irene Spencer. This is a true story, Irene actually experienced everything she reports in this book. She grew up as a Mormon and lived the most horrific life, you would have to read this yourself to understand just what she went through.

I can't really class Irene as my favourite author since she has only written one book so far, so I will say Cecilia Ahern and Jill Mansell are my favourite authors. When I start one of their books I just can't put it down, they have a way about how they write which just makes their stories so addictive so I'm always up til the early hours finishing them! My favourite book by Cecilia is 'Where rainbows end', and my favourite by Jill is 'An offer you can't refuse'. :D

I just started picking up reading a few months back. I've never really been a fan of reading books in spare time, but now I do. :D At the moment, i'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Before that I read his other one, The Kite Runner. The books are about Afghanistan and such...I just like reading about things in the Middle East. It really interests me.

The best book that I have read in a while would probably be Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. I love that book a lot. Probably everyone knows what it is and what it's about...but I just love it.

And lastly, my favorite authors would probably be J.R.R. Tolkien and Ernest Hemingway. Tolkien just had this vast imagine which made The Lord of the Rings. It's just amazing how he made a world out of his mind. Ernest's books I have always enjoyed, like For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Farewell To Arms.

I'm working my way through the CSI Miami novels and I'm loving them! My favourite book of all time is either One Child by Torey Hayden or Coronation Street At War by Daran Little. I love reading books based on TV shows {thumb2}

I'm currently reading: THE MOONSTONE, but it's been on hold for a while ! Oops! Anyway, it's a "mystery"-esque novel from the 1870s about India!?? I hope so!

The best book I have ever read is probably the Woman in White, also by Wilkie Collins. It's about a "mysterious woman dressed in white" who seems to be a ghost, but not really! It's been turned into a musical, which other than the actual secret that Anne Catherick (the Woman in White) holds, seems to follow atleast pretty much on target). I highly recommend it!, it's extremely well known in London to my understanding. (Anne maybe you can help out with that!)

Runner-Ups: The Scarlet Pimpernel, Les Miserables, Catcher in the Rye, Devil in the White City

Favourite author? Probably Wilkie Collins. He's dead, for a long time unfortunately, but I also like the way that J.D. Salinger writes.

To be honest, I LOVE reading books that have been the basis of musicals. Not only do I get a "summary"-esque of it on a recording, but the potential to see it live, the way someone else sees ______, among other things. Plus it makes a great reading comprehender :).

Hope to read soon: A Tale of Two Cities, maybe even Gone with the Wind
WONDERLAND:Alice's New Musical Adventure enjoyed a short, but sweet run on Broadway in Spring of 2011!

I'm currently reading Twilight. I think everyone knows what that's about - It's a vampire love story. It's great so far. I was also reading My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult and that was about a sister who was born to keep her other sister alive. She got sick of doing so, so she planned to sue her family.

The best book I ever read was Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. I could NOT put that book down. It's about a school shooting the before and after affects of it. The shooter lives, the ending is unpredictable. Great book.

Jodi Picoult is my favorite author, hands down. Read a book by her and you'll be a fan!
JANUARY SUCCESSES:: Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress, Shawn Johnson, Rob Schneider, Nikki Reed.

I am currently reading the autobiography of Mark Felt. Sorry that I can't remember the title.

No favorite author because I generally read biographies and history.

Favorite book is probably The Man of Bronze by Kenneth Robeson. This was the first in a series of adventure books written in the 1930's and 40's.

Everyones replies were so interesting to read :) I like the sound of a lot of the books you said about.
The next book I'm going to read is 'His favourite wife' by Susan Ray Schmidt. Can't wait to read it! :D It's by another of the wives of Verlan LeBaron, the man Irene Spencer, who I said about in my first post, was married to :)

I'm reading 'The Stand' by Steven King. It's my fourth or so attempt at it, because I forget that I need to read it. I only started reading it last night, so I don't really know what it's about. I also have 'The Shining' that needs to be read, and that's about it.
My favourite type of book is ones with lovely chocolate brownie recipes in
I'm also (meant to be) reading 'Frankenstein' for English. I'm never going to read it out of choice.
Favourite successes: Paramore, New Found Glory, Death Cab For Cutie

I am currently reading Misha by Misha Defonseca. It's a true story about a 7 year old girl traveling through Europe during wwII. Very intense book.
After this I am going to read Desert Flower by Waris Dirie (also a true story).
And I also just bought Thanks for the Memories by Cecilia Ahern. Love her books.

just finished reading hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams. i really cant do it justice in a description, but its mostly about a guy who escapes the earth just before it gets blown up, and then his travels around teh universe which all end in a very unlikely explanation of life as we know it  not geeky sci-fi, something there for everyone.
should probably be reading organic chemistry by clayden etc, but thats rubbish. no storyline or anything. lots of pictures though...overall i dont reccomend it :D

my favourite book is probably one flew over the cuckoos nest by ken kesey. very, very good book about life in a mental hospital (theres probably a better word for it...) under the care of a very old-fashioned nurse, which is all turned upside down by a guy who goes there from a work farm and messes with authority and that. this is why i dont write the back covfers of books...

favourite author? dont have one. just like what i like.
