Insurance?

Unread post by jasonw »

Hi all,

For those of you out there who are big collectors with stacks of autographs in your collection worthing tens of thousands of dollars - have you ever thought of buying insurance for your autographs? Or do you get the really rare/ expensive ones locked up in your safe in the bank?

Locking autographs in a safe is not such a good idea. I'm told a lot of moisture is created in such a safe which can destroy the autograph.

But your question is interesting and I'm looking forward to the replies :)

Well I actually have been thinking about it recently. As of right now I don't think I have anything worth insuring but if I am some how able to get a hold of some autographs that i really want that WOULD be worth more money I think I will. Not that I ever want to sell these autographs but for a just in case something happens purpose.

If you have anything of value it's a good idea to get it insured. Make a picture of the item and a copy of the receipt (if it was purchased) and keep that information in a fire proof safe. The biggest problem with insurance claims is proof of value. I have a friend that works at Allstate in the claims department and he admitted that if you don't have proof of value of your autographs (like a receipt) they usually just look on Ebay and decide the value of autographs on there. Which is not a good thing considering things go for dirt cheap on Ebay, mostly because there are a lot fakes on there.
I actually had my whole collection added to my insurance policy. I keep pictures of my items on a website and also on a flash drive, and I keep receipts and the flash drive in a fire proof safe.
