Here is a quote from the US postal service site:
First-Class Mail large envelopes are subject to First-Class Mail package prices if any one of the following apply:

• It is too rigid – does not bend easily

• It is not rectangular

• It contains items that cause more than 1/4 inch variation in thickness
Bold part mine addition. If you check the package prices, it comes out to 1.34. Your postal lady is not cheating you, it's the rules.

That would only apply if there was cardboard. So if you have cardboard that is what the .34 cents is about.
From what I read, the post lady said you have to pay more for writing Do not bend. The rule is if it can't be bent.
You should explain that to your post lady  . There is a horrible one here, who makes me explain what I will use stamps for, before I buy them :? .

over the last few weeks i have sent out a lot of requests. the lady at the post office that gets into your personal life is simply an idiot. you could write do not bend on any envelope. that does not give them the right to charge you more. by no means does it give her or anyone the right to scratch things off of your mail. you need to ask for her supervisor. they will fix that. all of the request i have sent out i want to make sure do not get bent should i get a reply. i am not someone who sends to anyone just to get an autograph. all of the ones i have sent are people that mean something to me personally. so for this reason i take a little more care. i have cut thick cardboard backings from card board boxes. i put one of those in a 9x12 sase. i then put that inside a 10x13 envelope address it and send it. i have not had one issue with bending in the mail. they do charge first class postage. for for the entire thing with the sase and cardboard inside is 1.34. my peace of mind is worth a lot more then 1.34 to me. when they come back you can use the cut cardboard over and over. no matter what you need to report that lady at the post office to a supervisor. you are her customer. she should treat you accordingly.

And quite rightly so too!

I only add extra stamps if I have actually increased the weight/thickness/rigidness etc by adding card. Not for writing 'Please Do Not Bend'. :x

Yeah i didnt send any carboard and she defientely said because i wrote do not bend. just the fact that i paid an extra 68 cents for her mistake pisses me off. yea its only 68 cents but as much as i send out requests that adds up fairly quickly.

The more I think about this, the more I think it's utterly ridiculous that we even have to write "Do Not Bend" let alone be charged for it! Surely if we send a 9x12 envelope it's because there is something of 9x12 size inside. Why would the Post Office assume the right to bend it to a smaller size for their convenience? If we wanted it folding, we would fold it ourselves and use a smaller envelope in the first place, would we not?

The bigger the company, the more mistakes they make.
