Sending to a foreign country? Language Question

Unread post by annie985 »

I have a question. I'm thinking about writing Thore Schulermann and Jo Weil from the German soap opera Forbidden Love and I know they both speak German and English is not their native language. My question is (and I hope this doesn't sound stupid lol) should I just send them a letter in English or should I try and translate to German. I've never written to someone overseas who doesn't know English before. Any help would be great for those who've had similar situations.

Hello :D

I guess there should be no problem to write the whole letter in English because most of Germans (especially younger) understand English quite well. They have to learn it in school! ;-)

If I were you I would start writing the topic sentence in German, then change to English (main part of your letter) and then change again to German for the concluding sentence. (Just as an idea :mrgreen:)

He surely will love your letter either way {thumb2}

PS: If you need help with German translation just pm me ;-)

Regards,

I would write in English because if your not that good with german and translate one word at a time, it doesnt work because of the word order and stuff. You could end up talking about the wrong thing lol ;)

Hi!

I always tend to write to people in their native language, even in languages I can't speak (I speak Czech, English, a bit of German), but I sent letters in Frech, Italian etc - I always found someone to translate them for me ;-) . What I'm trying to say is that writing in their native language could get you plus points because they would appreciate your effort {thumb2} . However, if you really can't speak it and find no one to help you with translation, write in English, they will most likely understand it because English is taught in most of the European countries as a first foreign language :D . So I can see no problem in writing in English, I just think writing in their mother tongue seems like you put s great deal of effort into your letter. :)

I wouldn't bother translating it into German, chances are it won't make sense, especially if you use an online translator. They probably can read English, a lot of Europeans can {thumb2}
