I'm not going to debate the authenticity of the autograph but this may be of interest to you.

If authentic, what an amazing find indeed! Congrats!! :o

If not... well, at least bought a first edition book for less than $3.

I addressed these theories in a previous posting. It is clearly not a stamp because the penstrokes are ovbious when looking at it in person. It is also not an autopen because there is enough variation between this signature and other specimens. I am not going to press the book onto the scanner for a clearer picture because I do not want to damage the binding.

Great find! I remember reading about something very similar to this in Autograph Magazine a few years ago.

Congratulations!

Believe it or not, I actually found an autographed MLK LP at the San Diego Central Library book sale.

It's called "The Stars Salute Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." and was recorded as a benefit for the SCLC shortly after Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize. Along with Dr. King's signature are the signatures of Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis, Jr., two of the artists who recorded songs for the album.

When I took it to the Antiques Roadshow, they conservatively estimated its value at $2500. But since then I've seen receipts and car rental brochures signed by Dr. King fetching $4000-7000.

So again, congratulations!

why are people claiming that because it was found in a thrift store it can't be real? in my opinion, it's highly UNLIKELY that it would be a fake. if it was the previous owner who forged it, surely they would have tried to sell it for thousands? if it was the thrift store who forged it, wouldn't they have tried to sell it for a lot more than $3? common sense here people: why would someone forge a signature onto a book that they are then only going to donate to a thrift store? they would get no money out of it, it wouldn't make sense. at the very least i'm sure it must be a secretarial, if not authentic.

The two signatures aren't similar in style. I'm afraid that this is probably secretarial. It's rounded, feminine, perfect, while the authentic one is wild, tall, angular. I'll bet there are quite a few of these around, and the article someone else posted is evidence for that.

Get it authenticated, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope.
