You can send without irc, just uk stamps. Uk stamps will cover your sase from uk only. irc's can be used from anywhere where there is a postal service. I dont know if this answers all your questions, just post again of it didnt.

Yes.

Stamps are always cheaper than IRCs.

Yes, IRCs are used instead of stamps, so you use one or the other. Stamps are always the better option, so do use them if you have them. Not only are they usually cheaper they're also easier for the recipient.

3 Forever stamps should be sufficient to get a letter & one or two photos to the UK.

For the return envelope, you'll need the following worth of stamps:
Up to 10g 62p
20g 90p
40g £1.35
60g £1.82

First class stamps (gold, with "1st" on them) are worth 39p, Second class stamps (blue, with "2nd" on them) are worth 30p. You can also use "none classed" stamps that have other monetary values on them (and are other colours). You just have to make sure it all adds up to the correct value (or over, say if you only have 1st class stamps). Dont forget to write "airmail" on your envelopes :)

You can use UK postage for anywhere in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Basically, make sure you dont use them to get a letter back from the Republic of Ireland (the southern bit), because they wont work :)

First of all, take a deep breath and relax. The Post Office is your freind. They have two things that can be extremely helpful:

1) They have a scale that is built into something like an ATM. You can use them to see if you have enough postage, and can even buy stamps from the machine (if needed) all at one time.

2) They have people. If the machine is too much for you the first time (like it was for me), you can get in line and talk to a real live person behind the counter who can answer your questions. I've done this many times, just get in line for the purpose of getting information. It's solved a lot of questions and made things much smoother. And they didn't mind one bit. I've even gotten in line just to get them stamped "Do Not Bend."

So any time you are unsure, first get everything ready to go, then pay a visit to your freindly neighborhood post office.
