RTS Duke Snider (Don't send to him)

Unread post by knobbs008 »

Got a RTS from Duke Snider today. He is not in the best health right now, please respect his wishes and privacy and don't send him fanmail at this time. Thank you.

So it was ok for you to send but not anyone else? LOL. Obviously they didn't write "Duke is ill please stop sending mail" on the envelope. So you had an idea he was stoping and wanted to get in under the wire.

It's been reported since the new year that he has been RTSing everything. It's also not just his health. He is tired of signing. occasioanlly he will sign some, but his wife/family RTS most if he dosen't get the mail.

People are still getting December mail outs RTSd from Duke, I just got one last Thursday I sent out in the first/second week in December.

But you are raising an awesome point about ttm "abuse". For so long people have leaned incredibly hard on Duke for sigs. Most just wrote him and when they received their auto ran with it. Instead of kicking him a few bucks he just got used time after time year after year and finally broke. I am not saying send every guy you send $80 but if you are sending a guy who gets a ton of ttm requests toss him a couple bucks. Not only is it a tangible sign of respect and gratitude it gives a better shot to those sending next.

He has done this in the past, and he will startup back signing I'm sure. Unless he really isn't doing well, then he probably won't be signing anymore. I can tell you, the last time I saw him In-Person, he wasn't doing well and that was 2 years ago.

Before anyone else jumps on my case, I did in fact send right after the New Year and I found out about his poor health a few days after I sent. I have gotten Mr. Snider's signature TTM once in the past on an index card and I found a real card of his I was trying to get signed, I was not trying to "get under the wire" as you assumed. The only reason I was asking for others not to send to him is because 1.) I am sure his family dosen't want to write "RTS" on envelopes when their family member is ill and 2.) It is a waste of stamps to send a request out only to be RTSed a few days later. I had no idea of his health when I sent the card out and had I known he wasn't in good health I most definatly wouldn't have sent it out. Next time before we accuse someone of "trying to get under the wire" make sure we have the facts straight. Duke was great to his fans for many years and is one of the only free signing Hall of Famers out there. So I will ask again to please do not send autograph requests to Duke Snider at this time. I am not the only one asking for this. It is all over other sport autographing websites. So next time do some research and don't accuse me of "getting in under the wire." Thank you. And thank you Mr. Snider for being great to your fans. Get well soon!

Great point Sawks. Duke never charges for cards and photos and even when he does charge for a ball it's 10$. I always send an old time player a few bucks, typically 5$. They didn't make big money, heck they had to buy their own equipement and pay their own travel expense. They actually need the money, and I feel deserve something for their time.

He has always been extremely gracious with signing, and everyone abused the heck out of him. I see the same folks on the sports boards sending him weekly. They have hundreds of signed cards but keep sending with not even a dollar for his time.

My original complaint is simple, don't send to someone then try to tell others not to. Especially when you say "He's sick so stop sending". That means you already knew that and sent anyway. Which is fine, to each their own; bu don't try to play the hero and pretend to give a flying poop about his well being.

Again, you knew about it and sent anyway trying to get under the wire. I'm not a fool. January 2nd there were RTS reports. You sent after it was "all over the web". It's cool, your not the only one. Almost everybody hurried and sent everything they had hoping he would sign. If you found his address you saw the RTS reports so you sent hoping to get a card as you don't want just an index card.

Don't play the victim when you know I'm right. Like I said before, what you do is your business. But don't play the hero and act like you are looking out for the guys benefit.

PS I guarantee you send again in a few months :D

Look, I sent to him on 1/9/10 and I was on SSG.com on 1/11/10 and saw for the first time an RTS from him. I don't sit in these websites 24/7 like I am sure you do. I have a life. I am still in high school so I don't do this for money. I do this because I love the game of baseball and its players. I sent to Duke for the first time about a year ago, when I first started TTMing. The only reason I sent to him again is because I found a Duke Snider baseball card and I thought it would be cool to have it signed. And there you go assuming again. No I will not send to him in a few months. I respect people's wishes. If they don't want fanmail they don't get if from me. Also, I most certainly am not playing hero. I thought it was the right thing to do, let others know about this great man's declining health. I said the same thing on SSG.com, about not sending to him. All I got there was "thanks for letting me know" or, "sorry to hear about him." I didn't have people assuming I tried to "get under the wire." That is not what I am about. I TTM for the fun of it and I wanted to let other TTMers know what is going on with this great signer. Thanks though for trying to be the big bad know it all.
