personalized autograph

i left this question in another topic, but i'm afraid it might not be replied to... i thought it might be better to just put it in its own topic, so, sorry for the repeat:

i'm sending a fanmail letter/autograph request to Patrick Stump (the lead singer of Fall Out Boy). I mentioned in my letter to him that it would be kind of nice for him to personalize the autograph (like, a little message or something) What do you think the chances are of him writing something back (either a small note or a quick note on the picture itself)? i mean, i DID ask him too, but that doesn't exactly mean he will. i don't even know if he'll even get it. I'm just afraid i might be getting my hopes up too high. this is the first time i've ever asked for an autograph...

I guess what i'm asking is: will a celebrity likely write a little message to you if you specifically ask? i know you can't really know these things for sure, but... is it really rare for a celebrity to write a small note (or personalize the autograph)?

sorry if this is confusing... i guess i just want everything to happen the way i wanted it to hehehe

No, it's not extremely rare for celebrities to personalize the autographed photos they send (that is, if they reply at all ). Many celebrities are worried about their autographs being sold on places like eBay. Then again, many celebrities are just really good to their fans and want to personalize them to show that they actually read your letter.

I don't think you're getting your hopes up too high, just be sure to be prepared in case the photo isn't personalized (this is all assuming he answers his fan mail in the first place).

To answer your question about Patrick specifically, I would guess that he will personalize it IF he actually reads your letter (I mean as opposed to just looking at your address/SASE and sending a pre-signed photo), but no one can really be certain.

One thing I've found is that you'll have a better chance for a real sig with some big names (I'm talking major star here) if you ask them to personalize it, especially if you ask them to inscribe it with your name.

The theory behind this is that autos lose approx 30-40% of their value if it's inscribed (To _____). So, asking the celeb to inscribe it is a good indicator that it's for a real fan, and not for resale.

Case in point: One of my first autos was to Mary Tyler Moore (back when she was still signing TTM), and I received the picture back unsigned with an AP(autopen). About a year later, after I learned more about collecting, I sent the pic again asking for her to make it out to me, and received it back signed/inscribed, with another one of hers S/I.

If you're a real fan, and the autos are not for resale, it's always best to ask for them to make it out to you. About half the time they will. Note: for some reason, politicians and big musicians are rare, TV and retired stars inscribe commonly. Megastars, be wary and watch out for secretarial.

I THINK that politicians and big musicians are so rare because fo the politicians they have things they are supposed to be doing, that's why they are in office. And big musicians are rare because they do so much other stuff and it would be impossible for them to respond personaly to everyone so they might just do a big stack and give them to the secratary. I had experience with this with Paul McCartney, except it wasn't signed, and Ringo Starr. I think the TV stars might inscribe commonly because they aren't filming all the time, and retired stars because they are retired. Again, this is my oppinion.
