Anyone who's been to a convention got some advice? It actually looks like I'll be able to go to MegaCon in Orlando which has a LOT of big name comic book guests. How do these actually work? Just lines in front of booths to see certain artists/writers for autographs? You think the artists would autograph/sketch my cards there?

Honestly I usually try to get some autographs from whoever you want after they are done with a panel that they appear on. A lot of the guys just hang out after panels in the panel room. Its always worked for me in the past. I hate standing in lines at publisher booths but that is one way to get free sketches from artists. Just get in line super early before the lines get capped. Find out what tables the artists are at, orient yourself, prioritize them by who you want the worst and get in line at their table as early as possible. Check the publisher booths, talk to whatever staff is working it and ask about when certain people will appear at them. Sometimes they have a white erase board up as well with names and times. Keep in mind that they may have to take off to do a panel or publisher booth appearance if you are in line for more than a few hours.

Oh and keep an eye on CBLDF and other comic charity booths, its a good way to get some autos or sketches for a donation, again be aware of times, certain artists are only at these booths for an hour and they only take a handful of commissions.

Some huge names require passes or tickets to get into their line, it depends on how the con runs it really.

Some guys you never really know until you ask them if they will do quick sketches or not, if you run names by me I can tell you about my luck with them if that helps.

Bendis will sign whatever all day long in as many numbers as you want, sometimes he throws in sketches. I've seen Garth Ennis sign stacks and stacks for a single person as well. Van Sciver will normally sketch for free in any of the hardcover books he was an artist on (GL Rebirth, etc) if he has the time. A few years ago all Warren Ellis did was sign stuff all day every day for hours at a time and he was constantly mobbed whenever he wasnt on a smoke break in Chicago. He was a machine.

As a few others mentioned, just keep in mind that the artists are there to make money so commissions come first, if they are booked full on commissions they may not sketch until they get to the publisher booth. Just ask they will tell you.

I'm glad to see lot's of Buzz of this topic!
I would love to have a sketch from Mark Bagley Erik Larson or Todd Mcfarlane but with the exception of Todd I've never been to a show they have attended. San Diego Comic Con had it set up to win a raffle ticket just to get a spot in line for Todd. I didn't win one.
The bigger the show the worst chance it is to talk to many of the artist.
John Romita Jr was doing free sketches at Adventure Con in Knoxville Tn a few years ago but after about an hour he started signing only.
I have all but written off SDCC as it has just gotten to huge. It's just not worth the trouble to fight for seats at panels, lines and such.
I've tried attaching some pictures but it's telling me the boards quota has been met.

In person meetings include, Stan Lee, John Romita Sr and Jr, Peter David, Rob Liefield, Arthur Sudam, Gary Freidrich (Ghost Rider) Joe Staton, Chris Clarmont, Dexter Vines, David Mack come to mind.

Adam Hughes will sign, sometimes he sketches on prints, but he constantly gets mobbed.
Greg Horn would set aside the last hour or half hour in the show day to sketch, not sure if he still does, sometimes he did donations to sketch at his table, just ask him he is nice.
Frank Cho will sign, I have never seen him do sketches or commissions at a show though.
Mike Choi is super nice, as of two years ago he was sketching for free and would sign.
The only luck I had with Perez is he would sketch at the Heroes Initiative table off and on, I just had him sign for a donation.
Greg Land will sign, wont sketch last time I saw him, he minimum commission fee was several hundred dollars at Chicago a few years ago.
Mike Perkins will sign, I was lucky enough to be one of only a few people to get on his commission list, you have to catch him at the right time for sketches, just ask him.
Brandon Peterson will sign and sketch when you buy one of his hardbound books at his table, not sure if you bring your own book if he will sketch in it or not.
