It's not exactly recent, but 15 years ago today, Jeremy Brett died, and I thought I'd just write a little something.
Jeremy Brett
3 November 1933 – 12 September 1995
Jeremy Brett is one of my heroes for so many reasons.
He was a wonderfully talented actor, and portrayed what many people describe as 'the quintessential' Sherlock Holmes. He will always be my Sherlock Holmes, at least. Even now, when I read through the novels, it's his voice that I hear, his mannerisms that I see. And no actor has ever left that impression on me before.
However, Jeremy Brett was not just known for being Holmes. From the early 1960s, Brett was rarely absent from British television screens. He starred in many serials, notably as d'Artagnan in the 1966 adaptation of The Three Musketeers. A few of his appearances were in comedic roles, but usually with a classic edge, such as Captain Absolute in The Rivals.
Brett eventually died on 12 September 1995 at his home in Clapham, London, from heart failure. His heart valves had been scarred by rheumatic fever contracted as a child.
Mel Gussow wrote in a New York Times obituary "Mr. Brett was regarded as the quintessential Holmes: breathtakingly analytical, given to outrageous disguises and the blackest moods and relentless in his enthusiasm for solving the most intricate crimes."
I miss him dearly and I never even met him.
