Re: R.I.P - Stars We Have Lost - R.I.P Re-Sir Norman Wisdom

Hi,

Such a great loss.one of the greatest British comedy actors, and such a nice down to earth person.

The comedian Norman Wisdom has died aged 95, his family confirmed today.

Wisdom, one of Britain's best-loved comic actors and known for his trademark cloth cap and slapstick humour, had suffered a series of strokes over the past six months which led to a deterioration in his mental and physical health. His family said he had passed away at a nursing home where he lived on the Isle of Man.

In a statement, the family, who said they were grieving for a "much loved father and grandfather", said: "Sir Norman Wisdom has today passed away at Abbotswood nursing home on the Isle of Man.

Over the last six months Norman has sustained a series of strokes causing a general decline in both his physical and mental health. He had maintained a degree of independence until a few days ago. But over the last few days his condition rapidly declined. He was in no pain or distress and peacefully passed over"

After delighting audiences during a career spanning 60 years, fans of the comedian were quick to offer condolences on Twitter last night as news spread.

NickMotown tweeted: "Sad news about Norman Wisdom's passing. As infectious a laugh as ever there was, allied to a willingness to delight & entertain. RIP."

Born in London in 1915, just after the outbreak of the first world war, Wisdom left school at 13 and worked at various jobs including stints as a coal miner, a waiter and a soldier, before embarking on a career as an entertainer. He went on to star in 18 films, winning one Bafta, and 32 television sitcoms and although he announced his retirement at the age of 90, he went on to appear in two further films.

Although most known for his comedic turns, including characters such as Norman Pitkin and his well-known theme song, Don't Laugh At Me (Cause I'm a Fool), he was also able to play serious roles including playing a doomed cancer victim in a harrowing BBC television play in 1981.

Included in his large following of fans, both in Britain and the US, was Charlie Chaplin, who called Wisdom his "favourite clown." He also named Wisdom as a successor: "If anyone's going to replace me – it's Norman Wisdom."

In 2000 he was awarded a knighthood and tripped as he left the ceremony, reportedly to the amusement of the Queen.

Speaking on his success in 2000, Wisdom said: "My comedy is for children from three to 93. You do need a slightly childish sense of humour and if you haven't got that, it's very sad." In 2007 Wisdom was reported to be living in a nursing home in the Isle of Man and suffering from the early stages of Alzheimers.

regards

I had just written to him two weeks ago, and I fear I was too late to tell him of my appreciation for his service.

CMOH Recipient David Herbert McNerney (1931 – 2010)

McNerney's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
1st Sgt. McNerney distinguished himself when his unit was attacked by a North Vietnamese battalion near Polei Doc. Running through the hail of enemy fire to the area of heaviest contact, he was assisting in the development of a defensive perimeter when he encountered several enemy at close range. He killed the enemy but was painfully injured when blown from his feet by a grenade. In spite of this injury, he assaulted and destroyed an enemy machinegun position that had pinned down 5 of his comrades beyond the defensive line. Upon learning his commander and artillery forward observer had been killed, he assumed command of the company. He adjusted artillery fire to within 20 meters of the position in a daring measure to repulse enemy assaults. When the smoke grenades used to mark the position were gone, he moved into a nearby clearing to designate the location to friendly aircraft. In spite of enemy fire he remained exposed until he was certain the position was spotted and then climbed into a tree and tied the identification panel to its highest branches. Then he moved among his men readjusting their position, encouraging the defenders and checking the wounded. As the hostile assaults slackened, he began clearing a helicopter landing site to evacuate the wounded. When explosives were needed to remove large trees, he crawled outside the relative safety of his perimeter to collect demolition material from abandoned rucksacks. Moving through a fusillade of fire he returned with the explosives that were vital to the clearing of the landing zone. Disregarding the pain of his injury and refusing medical evacuation 1st Sgt. McNerney remained with his unit until the next day when the new commander arrived. First Sgt. McNerney's outstanding heroism and leadership were inspirational to his comrades. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country.
