Hillary Clinton did the same thing a few years ago and it caused quite a stir.
To be fair to bookstores, would they have even heard of an auto pen?

Yep....both went back yesterday. {up}
And based upon this, I can't bring myself to spend the gas money, the time(it's over a two-hour drive to Wichita from my house), standing in line for hours probably, WITH all 3 of my kids in tote, for someone that uses an auto-pen to sign copies of her book, then pass them off as real to the general public. So I won't be going to the signing. {down}

I can see pehaps the bookstores have no clue, but I REALLY think the publisher should have made sure these were real autographs on these books! I mean, they have stickers on them saying "Signed First Edition", along with the tip-in page that says "This Signed Edition.....", but they're fake!! I imagine the books were sent to Palin to sign, and she autopenned them and sent them back. What publishers need to do, is have the celebrity sign however many copies right in front of them, so this doesn't happen.
I'm actually going to call HarperCollins Monday and see what I can find out.

Fair call. I would think publishers are aware of autopens and other tricks. Perhaps, in their ''non-collector'' mind, it does not matter, it is still her signiture?

i wouldn't go as far as a lawsuit but... it sounds very fraudulent to me.

you HAVE to know what you selling and they should be held accountable (the publishers).

the stores have nothing to do with the merchandise. they buy it and sell it for what they are told to sell it for (or what the MSRP is). they most likely didn't even look at the books, just put them on the shelves as soon as they came in.
Recent Success- Amanda Beard, Peyton Manning, Shane Battier

Best TTM Success- George W Bush, Muhammad Ali, Al Kaline

Favorite IP- Gordie Howe, Frank Thomas, Joe Torre, Joe Dumars

They can probably pass them of as "signed" since the autopen does actually apply a signature, which by definition means it signs the book.

However, it is something they need to collect. No telling how many people bought these books to pass along as Christmas gifts not knowing they are fakes. And now, they're on the market.

I suspect the shipment was sent to Palin's people. Since they autopen everything else that comes in, they decided to AP these as well. I sincerely hope they are called on it as Clinton's people were.

I doubt it was either Mrs. Palin or Mrs. Clinton's fault. I believe it was their staffers thinking they could be heroes to their boss by doing this and saving time.

However,

It was no different than the bookplates last year. She advertised both on her Facebook page, so she definitely knows what's going on.

You do realize that celebrities don't run their "Facebook" pages. Yes, they authorize them, but most times they have a webmaster that does it.

However,

Autopens can sign legally binding documents. Therefore, the books are signed. The sticker doesn't say "handsigned," therefore it's not TECHNICALLY fruad...
