Most big time celebs doesn't bother signing fanmail at all except in extreme rare cases (or they simply get too much , like 100s or 1000s a week !).....waited several yrs for Marcia Cross and only got autopen in the end

An autopen is sometimes used to deal with a high volume of signature requests - it is not used to "cheat" fans - it's a way to ensure that people do get an autograph (albeit, a mechanically-reproduced one.)
