I had the same problem with my mail woman. She kept bending all my mail before putting it in my mailbox - she even managed to completely fold in half a photo mailer. I spoke with her and explained what I "did" as in autograph collecting. She nodded and said she'd try to "honor" my request. She didn't. Two days later, same thing. I spoke with my post office supervisor and they were actually very courteous and apologized profusely after I showed her the photo mailer. That mail woman no longer delivers mail on my street and I haven't had a problem since.
I would try and speak with your mail person and explain nicely what you do and why you don't want the mail to be bent. I would go as far as to apologize for writing the note and say that it was written out of frustration and anger and you realize now that wasn't the correct action to take. If it happens again, I would then ask to speak with a post office manager/supervisor (if it's the same supervisor kindly explain the situation). It would also be helpful to show them proof of your bent mail, that way they can see what is happening. If nothing gets done you could always go to your post master and explain the situation to them. In these cases it's always good to be courteous and polite and just explain your situation.
Also a suggestion, even if you don't get cardboard. You could cut a file folder in half and stick it in your envelope (if you send out 9X12's) and that may help deter bending and it doesn't cost any more than it is to send a 9X12 without it. You could also call the post office customer service line and see if there's anything they can do for you.

I did a big no-no with my P.O. People.
