Re: Whitey Ford success on romlb with hof inscription

Congrats Big John on your wonderful success! I have a question and would like opinions please.....I was at a book signing for Mickey Mantle on my 21st birthday. O waited by his car behind the book store and he posed for a photo and signed an official AL Baseball....on the sweet spot. Is it worth either in person or through insured mail to try to get Whitey Ford etc on the ball as well. Not sure I would ever have a chance to meet Mr Ford but I could send it insured. I could also try to track down some players at a BB card show.....combining other HOF'ers or top hitters.
My main reason for asking is because even if I do not send it but try in person would I be ruining the value in the long run by adding players that arent in his caliber? After all Joe D is dead and Yogi I hear is difficult to get. Ive wondered for years as my 21st birthday was 21 years ago.....lol
Thanks for any reply.

I would definitely not have the ball signed by Whitey Ford. For a Mantle signed baseball, the single sweet spot signature is worth more than a multi-signed ball...especially with Whitey on it.

Not sure about that last reply. Whitey and mantle balls are pretty valuable due to the fact obviously that they were teammates but it also helps that they are both hall of fame inductees of 1974. Theme signed baseballs usually have some type of increased value.

@countpaul - DO NOT by any means add more Yankees signatures to the single signed Mantle Ball!!! That would be collecting suicide!!!

Any hard core sports collector will tell you the same thing.

Getting Whitey to HOF a TTM item is hard at all... all you have to do is pay his fee of $20 per inscription and he'll write what ever you want!

Well I was even thinking instead doing a 500 club ball and getting Hank Aaron and Willie Mays etc....... But not through the mail because I dont wanna loose the ball.....I also think just adding one or two probably wouldnt look right so for now it stays just Mantle. Thanks everyone.

Don't put Willie Mays on anything that is already signed by someone else!

He is legaly blind and can hardly write his name. The chances of him signing right over and ruining that Mantle graph are 99.9%!

If you want to start a 500 HR ball, just buy a ball already signed by Mays and Aaron. You can find authentic ones at a good price.

Thanks :-) Is this really signed by Willie Mays or his wife?

That doesn't look like any Willie Mays signature that I've seen...I'm assuming thats his wife...and he's right about Willie Mays...he will ruin your piece in a heart beat. For some reason, he will ALWAYS sign differently than everyone else...different pen or different area or exactly the opposite of where you tell him to sign it...its amazing how many pieces I've seen over the years that were messed up by him signing over someone else's name or signing it on top of the photo when everyone else signed on the bottom...absolutely amazing! In regards to that Mantle ball...I'd keep it as just a Mantle ball and treasure it...Its going to cost more money than its worth to get most of the 500 HR guys on there...Willie is charging somewhere around $500 now per auto. Almost all of the 500 HR guys are horrible signers and expensive...

Willies graph was similar to that pre 1980s. But that is his wifes version for sure!

Just a thought, you could also do a Triple Crown baseball. Only two guys to add for that one.
Feedback is always welcomed and appreciated!

I collect signed Hall of fame postcards and 8x10 photos signed by baseball Hall of Famers and I'm always looking to add to my collection with players I don't have yet.
Totals(not including doubles)
HOF postcards: 63
HOF photos: 68

Thank you to everyone on this site for all the help!!
