Writing but not asking for an autograph.

Unread post by margotchanning »

I'm just curious!

Have you ever written to a celebrity and not requested an autograph?

I have done this on several occasions. Sometimes when I write a really sincere letter, I feel like it takes away from the sincerity to ask for something in return. On most occasions, the celebrity responded anyway (Bruce Forsyth, Richard Carpenter, Rita Rogers) and I got a letter as well as an autograph so it kind of worked in my favour!

Of course, 9/10 times I ask for an autograph and send a sase but there are some celebrities I love so much that I don't want them to think I'm only writing to get a signed photo.

Anyone else feel like this?

Hey margotchanning :)

Wow :) I've never actually thought about doing that before, I know that there are people who do it {up} Just to tell the celebrity that they appreciate his/her work :D Well actually to be honest I have done that once, my first ever letter to a celebrity - Daniel Radcliffe if you wanted to know :lol: But that was in 3rd grade, I was so excited to write to him :) At the time I think they were filming thee... 3rd HP movie?
Being that young and innocent :oops: I was kind of expecting an actual letter from him replying to me :lol: But I got his PP :( So yeah.. that was the last time I did that.. I wasn't even thinking about autographs back then.

Now that I actually collect autographs my letters still tell the celeb how much I admire their work, but also I also send an SAE and a few pictures.. :mrgreen:

I just might start doing that with some people soon though :) Celebs that I don't really feel like getting an autograph from but would like to tell them that they're talented etc. :razz:

Nice topic, it would be interesting to see other people's replies {thumb2}

When I was younger I used to write to some of my favourite bands and singers just to tell them how big a fan I was, I didn't know it was possible at the time to request autographs TTM so I never thought to try. Since I have been collecting, however, I have only ever sent 1 letter not requesting an autograph. This was a thank you note to Jorge Garcia, but he still send me an autograph anyway! Along with a handwritten letter :) So lovely of him.

In 2005 before I collected, I wrote to Kelly Clarkson and just told her how big of a fan I am. But, I haven't done it since. {thumb2}

You know, that's really nice to do...but if they did want to return something, if you include a SASE it's actually nicer so they don't have to worry about postage and stuff. Right?

I have done that before though. But, that was only when I was younger and had no clue about autograph collecting. :)

When I ask for autographs though, I always am really nice about it though. And tell them I don't like fully expect it of them since they're so busy. I just tell them it would mean a lot to me. And it does. I never write to celebs I don't at all really care about. Why waste time on that when there are so many people I do admire.

Nice topic :)

When I was about 13 years old I wrote a letter to a famous German comedian (Ingolf Lück if anyone knows him ;) ) just to tell him that I found it unfair that I couldn't get any tickets for "his" tv show (Wochenshow). Once I got through and spoke to a woman to book some tickets she said that only 16yrs+ were allowed to join the audience because of the late hour the show had been broadcasted (saturdays at 22.15pm). I wrote all my anger down and sent it off to Ingolf. A few weeks later I got a real nice personalized autograph plus a letter! He thanked me for my letter and wrote down some dates. He said that I should tell him which date would be best for me so that he could book 2 tickets for me and my mom 8) I was over the moon and totally freaked out :lol: 8) So I told him the day I was able to come (to Cologne) and he really did reserve 2 tickets! After the show we met in the lobby and talked a while. That was soooo crazy. I mean, I was not only young (14 when I went to the show) but also met my first REAL celeb. I can't imagine a word I said to him or he said to me as I was too excited which is a little sad though... ;-) But I have a nice photo of Ingolf and me. After this we continued writing letters. I have 5 or 6. In one letter I asked him to send me another autograph cos one of my birds pooped on it. He sent me a new auto inscribed to me an a 2nd inscribed "to Janet's bird" looool

A year later he did the same thing again (reserving me 2 tickets) and all of a sudden the contact broke :( Last year I wrote another letter asking if he still knew who I was and I wrote about those things that had happened in the past but he only sent another inscribed auto without any reply. He's a real cool guy and I hoped it all ended differently but I enjoyed the almost 2 years we had contact. It was something special...

After this I only sent out 1 letter without requesting anything. It was just today :lol: 8) Addressed to Clay Aiken. I thanked him for sending me his auto as it's kinda hard to get it nowadays.

The only letter that I sent that was like that was to George Carlin. I didn't even think about asking for autographs at the time... he replied with a personalized 8x10.

I wrote to David Tennant after seeing Hamlet for the first time. I actually dropped the letter off at the stage door. It was only a thankyou card really, but I just wanted to say how much the show had affected me.

I don't think I have. The reason I write is to obtain an autograph. For myself, I just don't see the point. I am an autograph collector.
